You can tell if it is oxidation or reduction by looking at the electrons and oxidation numbers. Remember, LEO says GER, Loss of Electrons is Oxidation and Gain of Electrons is Reduction. Also, when looking at oxidation numbers, oxidation can be defined when there is a gain in the oxidation number. Reduction is defined as a loss in oxidation number.
LJ, ite you probably already handed in your worksheet. Oh well, its good to know though. For like number 5. finding the oxidation number, look at a. P4O8. The rule is that Oxygen oxidation number is always -2. So you multiply it with 8 and you get -16. Equilibrium. You need to make it balanced. So for P4 you need to get +16 cuz like you have -16 for the Oxygen. So you multiply 4 with +4 and you get +16. So -16 and +16 crosses out. And Voila! Its as simple like that. If you still don't get it. I'll show you its mad simple and I cant really explain something by like typing. But i hope tis helps.
Who needs help with the REDOX reaction worksheet
ReplyDeleteDont be afraid to post ay questions on the blog just because there are no comments....:)
I am a little confuse still on how you can tellif it is being reduce or oxidated

I am confuse on how to find the reduing and the oxidating number
ReplyDeleteCan oxidation occur without reduction?
ReplyDeleteBianca,
ReplyDeleteoxidation can not happen without reduction because it would be a half reaction they both have to happen at the same time
